I found this antique writing desk while vintage shopping in LA, and it immediately made me think of this class. The innovative interior of this writing desk reminds me of what we have discussed in class regarding the importance of having a personal desk to a woman of 18th c. France. All of the hidden contraptions allow for a newly discovered sense of privacy. The part that looks like a stage in the center of the interior of the desk is highly intriguing to me as well. I’m not sure if it is intended to store jewelry or makeup, but the stage-like qualities of it make me imagine that its owner, at some point, played with dolls inside this desk, which allowed her the ability to imagine a world of her own inside this piece of furniture.
