The Snuff Box

USE OF THE TABATIERE

L’Exercise de la Tabatière:

  1. Prenez la tabatière de la main droite.
  2. Passez la tabatière de la main gauche.
  3. Frappez sur la tabatière.
  4. Ouvrez le tabatière.
  5. Présentez la tabatière a la compagnie.
  6. Retirez a vous la tabatière.
  7. Rassemblez le tabac dans la tabatière, en frappant la tabatière de coté.
  8. Pincez le tabac de la main droite.
  9. Tenez quelque temps le tabac dans les doigts avant que de le porter au nez.
  10. Portez le tabac au nez.
  11. Reniflez avec justesse des deux narines et sans grimacer. 
  12. Fermez le tabatière, éternuez, crachez, mouchez.

1. Take the snuffbox with the right hand.
2. Pass the snuffbox to the left hand.
3. Tap on the snuffbox.
4. Open the snuffbox.
5. Present the snuffbox to one’s company.
6. Return the snuffbox to one’s own possession.
7. Gather the tobacco in the snuffbox by striking the side of the snuffbox.
8. Pinch the tobacco with the right hand.
9. Take some time to hold the tobacco in one’s fingers before bringing it to one’s face.
10. Bring the tobacco to the nose.
11. Sniff confidently from both nostrils and without wincing.
12. Close the snuffbox, sneeze, spit, sniff. (1)

      De temps en temps, lorsque quelqu’un passait sur la chaussée, il tirait une belle tabatière d’or et y prenait une prise d’une façon si distinguée, que, rien qu’a ce geste significatif, on eut pu dire qu’il appartenait aux classes les plus élevées de la société. 

“Occasionally, when someone walked along the street, he would pull a beautiful golden snuffbox and took a pinch in a way so distinguished that by seeing this gesture alone we could know that he belonged to the highest classes of society.” (2)

The use of the snuff boxes was almost as important of a symbol as the box itself. Up to a certain point, particular snuff-taking etiquette was involved, until the user would succumb to universal bodily reactions to the snorting of tobacco (sneezing, spitting, sniffing).
