Copyright Information

A Virtual Enlightenment (AVE) makes its collection available in support of research and scholarship by members of the Barnard College community and others.

Permissions, Licensing, & Fair Use

The digital collection or online exhibition includes materials that are protected by copyright and subject to license or other rights, such as rights of privacy or the use of names and likenesses.  In respecting those rights, users of materials in the AVE digital collection, including its online exhibition, may need to seek permission from the rights holder to reproduce and otherwise use the materials. Alternatively, users may be able to use the digital collection, online exhibition and the materials contained in them as permitted by law, such as under fair use and other copyright exceptions.

The materials are displayed “as is” and without warranties of any kind, either express or implied, including any warranties of title, non-infringement of copyright or other rights. AVE makes no representation about the copyright or other legal status of the materials.  It is the users responsibility to investigate and, if needed, clear rights to use these materials.

Users may link to our digital collection or online exhibition for educational and research purposes. If you wish to publish or reproduce materials in the digital collection or digital collection and online exhibition, or if you have questions, comments, or additional information related to our digital collection or online exhibition, please contact: sgreene@barnard.edu.

To Report a Copyright Violation

In accordance with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 (DMCA), AVE has designated an agent to receive notice of alleged copyright infringement occurring on web pages or computer servers under the bt.barnard.edu/avirtualenlightenment, bt.barnard.edu/ave2015 and  bt.barnard.edu/ave2016 domains (AVE sites). If you believe that your copyrighted work is being infringed on a AVE site, please notify AVE’s designated agent for receiving such notices: Sarah Greene (Barnard Teaches: Real Place + Digital Access, Office of the Provost, Barnard College, 3009 Broadway, New York, NY 10027; Phone: 212-853-0169; Fax: 212-280-8985).

Content of Notices

In order for the AVE to take any action on the basis of your notice, the notice must be in writing and it must include the following information:

  • Identification of the copyrighted work or works claimed to have been infringed.  If multiple works are allegedly being infringed at a single site, please provide a representative list of such works.
  • A description of the material that is claimed to be infringing, and information sufficient to permit AVE’s agent to locate the material.
  • Contact information for you, including your address, telephone number, and/or email address.
  • A statement by you that you have a good faith belief that the use of the material in the manner complained of is not authorized by the copyright owner, the owner’s agent, or by the law.
  • A statement by you that the information in the notification is accurate, and under penalty of perjury, you are authorized on behalf of the owner to enforce the copyrights that are claimed to be infringed.
  • A physical or electronic signature of the copyright owner or the person authorized to act on behalf of the rights owner.

The AVE will not be able to act promptly on your complaint, or at all, if you do not provide all of the information listed above.
